How many players can play Frostrail?
Frostrail supports one to four players: you can play solo or form an online co-op crew of up to four people in total. For a hosted group, that means the host and up to three friends, so a group of five will exceed the confirmed limit. Knowing the total before you organize a session saves you from planning around an extra seat that the demo does not promise.
The October 19, 2026 demo announcement confirms both solo play and the four-player co-op limit. You can check the official Frostrail demo announcement and developer updates for the current information. This answer applies to the October demo information checked on October 20, 2026.
Count the whole crew, including the host
The four-player limit describes the entire group. It does not mean four guests in addition to the person hosting.
| People in your group | Fits the confirmed crew size? | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Yes | Solo play |
| 2 | Yes | Two people in one co-op crew |
| 3 | Yes | Three people in one co-op crew |
| 4 | Yes | The confirmed maximum crew |
| 5 or more | No | Beyond the announced four-player limit |
You do not need four people to start enjoying the game. The developers' earlier FAQ also describes crews of one to four players, so the maximum should not be mistaken for a required party size.
What can a co-op crew do together?
Frostrail combines operating and maintaining a steam-powered train with exploration, gathering resources, crafting, and fighting. The train is the crew's mobile base, while abandoned settlements provide resources and expose players to threats such as Revenants.
A practical way to plan your group is to discuss who will pay attention to the train and who will handle the next expedition's supplies. You can also agree on a return point before exploring a dangerous location. Those are suggestions for coordinating people, not fixed character classes or mandatory roles.
The official first-look trailer's narration describes crew members repairing walls while others look for wood and food. That illustrates dividing tasks, but it does not establish automatic job assignments, special role bonuses, or how difficulty changes with each additional player.
Check the mode before making broader multiplayer plans
Steam lists single-player and online co-op for Frostrail and its demo. The confirmed group size answers how many people can be in a crew; it does not by itself confirm split-screen, crossplay, dedicated servers, or larger modded sessions.
If one of those features is essential to your group, check a current official announcement or the options in your installed build before planning around it. The source material for this guide does not provide a verified setup procedure for those features.
Also keep demo information separate from older playtest invitations. Earlier announcements explained how accepted testers could invite friends into a closed test. Those access invitations are not evidence of a larger simultaneous crew, and they should not be treated as the current demo's joining instructions.
FAQ
Is the maximum four players or five including the host?
Four players in total. Count the host as one of the four, leaving room for up to three friends.
Can two people play Frostrail together?
Yes. A two-person crew fits the officially described one-to-four-player range. You do not need to fill every place.
Can you play the Frostrail demo alone?
Yes. Solo play is explicitly confirmed in the October 19, 2026 demo announcement.
Does the four-player limit confirm split-screen or crossplay?
No. The available official information confirms online co-op and the crew size. It does not establish either of those additional features.
